The Lancaster House Agreement

... was signed on 21 December 1979. At that time, Zimbabwe was claiming independence as Zimbabwe Rhodesia (an unrecognised state that had been declared on 1 June 1979).

According to Wikipedia, Zimbabwe Rhodesia had ceased to exist on 12 December 1979 and had been succeeded briefly by the re–established British colony of Southern Rhodesia. About three months later, it was granted internationally recognised independence as the Republic of Zimbabwe.

Either "Zimbabwe" or "Rhodesia" was accepted as the answer to this question – even if neither is strictly correct!

Lancaster House is in the West End of London, near St. James's Palace. Built for the second son of King George III, it was originally to be known as York House. Unfortunately the Duke of York and Albany didn't live to see it completed; it was bought by the 2nd Marquess of Stafford (later the 1st Duke of Sutherland) and renamed Stafford House. In 1912 it was bought by the soap-maker Sir William Lever, 1st Baronet (later 1st Viscount Leverhulme) who renamed it in honour of his native county and presented it to the nation in the following year.
